Sports are always
a main part of the UAE's traditional activities and are promoted for its
supplementary roles as an entertainer and cultural tie ups between people who
are interested in sports. This report explores results from a research
conducted about the
traditional sports of the UAE in the past in contrast with our modern sports,
such as falconry, camel racing, traditional boat racing, dhow racing and
equestrian sports. Although there are many sports in our early days, but still
not all of the Emiratis are participating in those sports and leisure
activities.
Many reporters in the UAE have conducted that sports are leisure activities that have been performed by the UAE people for a long time. In order to comply with those traditional sports, it responsibility to develop the fact that traditional sports are of a major importance in our modern days by building the enthusiasm in their kids to be part of any sport taking place. However, there are many barriers which affected the participation of many groups in the UAE, including economic groups, gender and nationality groups.Moreover.
Oral history is the collection and study of
historical information using tape recordings of interviews with people having
personal knowledge of past events. Oral histories are important as they give a
sense of accomplishment and the interviewer can collate important things which
are valuable from the receding tide of the past. Oral histories are important
in the UAE as Sheikh Zayed’s nation believed that a nation which has no past
has neither a present nor a future.
Mubarak Saeed Alharthi
is a 75 year old man, who was a participant in many traditional sports at his
time when he was a youth. Mubarak was born on 16th of January, 1940
in Abu Dhabi. Mubarak is a father of four boys and two girls, and he believed
that he should develop the fact that kids should be aware of the importance of
sports and never ignore it. His mission for the past 35 years was to revive many old games which were played in the past. He
participated in many events in order to teach young kids the games of their
ancestors. Mubarak Alharthi lives in a heritage area, inside an old traditional
home as if he was still in the 20th century. He confirmed that his
house is full of all the items which were common in the old days and they are
precious and valuable to him.
Rashed: What is
the importance of sports to you?
Mubarak: Sports have been an important part of humanity from early childhood as participating in sport activities means having better health than people who avoid sports, as well as it gives a sense of happiness and enjoyable of the sport.
Rashed: Are traditional sports still important in our days?
Mubarak: In the present generations, kids lack the knowledge of traditional sports as they have moved their playgrounds to cyber world, thus losing out on all the fun and learning experience of sports at the past.
Rashed: From where did you get the equipment to play sports?
Mubarak: Equipment wasn’t the same as the modern equipment, since we had to use waste things like sticks, cans, etc and be creative to think of a game to be played but now the equipment is produced for us and we have to buy them.

To conclude,
this project helped me as a student to value things which should be valued but
are ignored. I learnt that we shouldn't let the new technology and new
developments affect our tradition and we should try to convince all age groups
and gender groups towards building the belief in themselves that they can do
things which they think they can't. Also, we shouldn't forget the tradition of
our ancestors and try to pass those traditions to upcoming generations.
Moreover, this project taught me that we shouldn't rely on unnecessary things
in order to live life and be happy, but we are the ones who should be creative
and build the happiness in ourselves.
Since 1970s sports has involved
a number of studies intended to look at their importance in our lives.
Researchers began this project because the UAE have contributed to develop
sports more and that they are an integral part of an individuals life since
they play a huge role on our lives as well as they help in a sustainable
development.
